YAY GALLERY AT VIENNA CONTEMPORARY 2015

24 Sep - 27 Sep 15

YAY Gallery is delighted to announce their participation in Viennacontemporary 2015, 24-27 September 2015. Situated at booth B20, the gallery, who are exhibiting at the fair for the first time, showcases new and recent sculptural work by Azerbaijani artists Rashad Alakbarov and Farid Rasulov.

Rashad Alakbarov is one of the key Azerbaijani artists to come to international attention in recent years. He is best known for his installation-based ‘shadow works’ in which he arranges objects and fragmented materials in front of a light-source to cast shadows in unexpected configurations. Using these shadows to project text, calligraphy and language, the artist continually questions the relationship between sign and meaning. For viennacontemporary, Alakbarov presents new ‘shadow-works’ in a continued exploration of the parallels between installation and creation.

In addition, artist Farid Rasulov presents two new sculptures from his latest body of work. The artist repurposes the humble wooden crate, among other mass produced items, transforming them into ornamental objects through the introduction of hand carved, intricately interlocking designs that are traditional to the region.

Rasulov’s new works are representative of his ongoing exploration of the contrasts that arise between traditional culture and a rapidly approaching era of modernization and globalization in Azerbaijan. He has explored this theme in the past through a range of media, appropriating architectural details, traditional motifs and through the juxtaposition of materials such as concrete and stained glass.
