March 2024

French art group Les Gens d’Uterpan come to Baku

23 Mar - 24 Mar 14

X-Event 2.6 at YAY Gallery / X-Event 2.3 at Museum Centre

Organised by YARAT Contemporary Art Space, supported by the Institut Français d'Azerbaïdjan and the European Cultural Foundation STEP Beyond.

We’re happy to announce that Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet (together, Les Gens d’Uterpan) will perform in Azerbaijan for the first time, at YAY Gallery and the Museum Centre. They will also deliver an artist talk at the International Mugham Centre.

Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet, in partnership with the CAC Bretigny, have developed several performances - the X-Event. Their creations point out and question the frontiers between dance and the plastic arts through the exhibition of living art. This attitude creates different ways of managing dancers, choreographers and spectators and helps to push the boundaries of traditional choreography. One principle used in X-Event is that of reversibility, a tactic, which, via the imposition of constraints and extreme limitations of contexts on performers, gives rise to the reverse situation: the liberation of individualities and an acute awareness of place.

Each X-Event is accompanied by sound from the baritone voice of Victor Torres. The extensive sound is coordinated by Nicolas Martz.

From 23rd March, YAY Gallery is projecting several video recordings of previous work by Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet.

Selected past performances: Project Arts Centre, Dublin, Ireland; Tate Modern and Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, United Kingdom; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; VI Cali Performance Festival, Colombia; Galeria Vermelho, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, Poland; Kunsthaus Graz, Museum Joanneum, Austria; Berlin Biennial of Contemporary Art, Germany; Nam June Paik Art Center, Seoul, Korea; White Box, New York, USA; Space18 - Bund18, Shanghai, China; Museum for Contemporary Art, Zagreb, Croatia; CAC Vilnius, Lithuania; MAC Lyon, France; Museion, Bolzano, Italy; Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France.

X-Event 2.6

The dancers walk freely within a defined space. They stare at one another or at the visitors in a neutral fashion, without any intention. They do not talk, they sit or lie down on the ground without ceasing to search out someone's eyeline. The action is maintained for several hours.

According to the protocol Le gout (2007) with performance and video exhibition.YAY Gallery, 5 Kichik Qala Street, Baku

X-Event 2.3

A group of dancers push each other, throwing one another out of the central perimeter defined by two crossing trajectories. After falling each dancer gets up and re-enters the perimeter in order to push another dancer or be pushed and fall again. The action is maintained until the group's energy is exhausted.
