YARAT Contemporary Art Space is pleased to invite you to the Open Studio Day at YARAT Studios.

As last year YARAT studios is happy to open the doors for visitors. We invite you for an experience across all medias of arts with the whole family. International and local artists will share their knowledge with you and invite to join the studio activities. We will offer a possibility for personal meetings or learn more about the artist’s works in workshops and presentations. In addition, we provide material how to participate in YARAT education programs, such as ARTIM Lab and YARAT Academy.

YARAT Studios was conceived with a mission to create a platform for creative exchange and provide artists with working environment. The building comprises of eleven working studios which are used by Azerbaijani and visiting international artists. The studios also houses YARAT residency programme that invites international artists to stay and work in Baku for up to three months. Resulting shows are hosted by the Artim Project Space.

Workshops Lecturers

Emil Mecnun

Graffiti artist Emil Mecnun (aka Moosem13) presents a live graffiti performance at the Open Studio Day. Emil was born 1995 in Baku. After years of experiments with different medias, he discovered the "graffiti world “ that opened up new ways and possibilities for him. Graduating from high school, he moved to Florence (Italy) for next 3 years to study graphic design and visual communication that had a big impact on his graphic style. Throughout the last years he has been travelling to different countries and creating works in different sizes and surfaces. The artist settled down in Baku focusing more on studio works, but also being involved in social projects among others.


Aurélien Lepetit

Current international YARAT resident Aurélien Lepetit (1992, France) will make a presentation of his works during the Open Studio Day. He is an Amsterdam based multidisciplinary artist and designer. He holds a B.A. in Design of Spaces specialized in Set and Stage Design, lyon, France, an M.A. in exhibition Design and an M.A. from the Dirty Art at the Sandberg Instituut. His work has been exhibited in Italy, France and Netherlands. The artist investigates in movement, gestures and attitudes from daily-life motion as a choreography. Lepetit’s work seeks the meaning of masculinity by questioning the body as a cluster to research beauty ideals, societal pressure and its impacts through medium such as video, installation and performance. Overlapping and merging olympic sport’s movement as a dance, Fitness as a societal obsession and clubbing as a space of anthropological analysis shaping identities.


Evy Jokhova

As well our other international Evy Jokhova will make a presentation of her works to the audience. She was born in Switzerland to a Russian father and an Estonian/Dagestani mother. She grew up in Vienna, Austria. As a child she spent a significant amount of time traveling to see family in Estonia, Soviet and post-Soviet Russia. This multi-cultural background, exposure to diverse social and political structures in altering states of flux and stability and the complex relationships between the perceived, the imagined and the accepted norms inform her work. Themes of human co-existence and cooperation are also often referenced.  Current projects include: ‘Totems | Cairns’ an ongoing body of sculptural works investigating the many facets of our relationship with stone, from the myths and legends of classical antiquity to the structures of the modern built environment; and ‘The Shape of Ritual’ – a research project exploring the relationship between sound, architecture and the body through transcribing buildings into music, and playing the music back inside the buildings accompanied by sculptures that alter the acoustics of space and performances that transcribe the buildings into dance or song.


Vusal Rahim

Vusal Rahim invites all children between the age of 3 and 10 years to explore in an interactive performance the different stages, how a caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly. He will play a game with the children that will make them understand the meaning of transformation in nature. In the last part of the performance the artist will paint together with the children the studio walls with colorful butterflies. Vusal Rahim was born in 1987 in the city of Ganja. He got artistic education at drawing study circle of Ganja Children’s Art Center in 2003-2006 and Ganja Children’s Art Academy in 2005-2006. Later he entered Azerbaijan State Academy of Art was studying at “theater and decorative design” department. The artist deals with questions on gender, the body and social issues working in different medias such as painting, performance and video. He conducted many projects and workshops with children.


Sofiya Ahadova

ArtimLab participant Sofiya Ahadova investigates in issues of psychology, culture and citizenship. In her workshop she will discuss questions related to the perception of the “self” and the “other”. What does connect us? When do we feel difference?  In the process the results of the discussion will be recorded on round stickers. Born 1993 in Neftchala (Azerbaijan) she studied at ADRN-Fine art college Baku (Azerbaijan), Sakarya Universtiy (Turkey) and Accademia di Belle Arti die Brera Milan (Italy). Upcoming projects include the Light-Shadow Art Project Skopje (Macedonia) and the Aiesec Program art project in Damietta (Egypt). During the ArtimLAB project she contributed to the exhibition “Mapping the Intagible” curated by Juan Sandoval, Director of Cittadellarte Office Fondazione Pistoletto, Biella (Italy).


Shalala Salamzade

After a presentation of inspiring artists investigating in digital and post-internet issues, Shalala Salamzade invites the visitors to participate in her glitch art challenge. Firstly, everyone will take pictures with his/her smartphone, afterward, by the artist’s instructions, each participant will perform various manipulations with the method of encoding and save the results in the form of photos.  Shalala Salamzadeh (*1995, Baku) graduated from Western Caspian University, faculty of Computer Technology and Design. Being a multidisciplinary designer and digital artist, the main focus of her works is post-Internet and social issues. She is a member of the international “Glitch Artists Collective”. Being a participant ARTIMLAB 2018/2019 her recent works were shown in the exhibitions “Neuroimaging”, an interdisciplinary project with neuroscientist Nurana Kazimova, and “Mapping the Intagible” curated by Juan Sandoval, Director of Cittadellarte Office Fondazione Pistoletto, Biella (Italy).


Aydan Mirzayeva

The artist will implement a workshop dedicated to the relationship of humanity and nature relating to her most recent series “Monologue of trees” in which she deliberately let herself being inspired by the structure of wood. Every structure tells its own story, which she emphasizes trough her technique. During her workshop she wants to reveal insights on the basis of empathy and shifting perspectives. How does the world look from the perspective of a tree? What would we think and feel?  Mirzayeva was born in 1992 in Baku, Azerbaijan. She graduated from the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts in Industrial Design (2010-2014). Aydan Mirzeyeva participated successfully in the ARTIM LAB project 2017/2018 and was granted with a residency at YARAT Studios. She recently returned from the Art Prospect Residency Program in Kiev (Ukraine).


Diana Hajiyeva

In her workshop the “Image of the sound” Diana Hajiyeva will discuss and unobtrusively show that the world of music does not only consist of notes. Music as a dramatic form of art has its own story line which can be seen via our imaginary view based on our associations, life experience, emotions and even smells. After the presentation she will perform some unreleased music pieces in a small set. Diana Hajiyeva is a famous singer and songwriter based in Azerbaijan. She represented Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Skeletons" finishing in 14th place. She is a member and the lead vocalist of the group Dihaj.
