REDEEMING THE EVERYDAY
THE ARTIST AS PHOTOGRAPHER, MAKER AND THINKER.
Period:
1 – 15 December 2014
(2 weeks)
COURSE LEADERS: Rossella Emanuele and Mervyn Arthur (UK)
Artists Rossella Emanuele and Mervyn Arthur work both independently and collaboratively and share an interest in the idea of an inter-disciplinary practice that engages with photography, video, performance and sculpture. They exhibit and publish work regularly in the UK and Europe.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This workshop invites participants to consider how art can be made using material from the everyday world. An introductory lecture and seminars will survey recent trends in photography and contemporary art and will be followed by practical workshops, one-on-one discussions and group tutorials. Participants will be asked to respond to the idea of working with ‘the everyday’ through extensive practical experimentation using photography, lens-based media, three-dimensional construction and contextual research. Through dialogue with your tutors and fellow participants you will be encouraged to investigate how ideas can migrate across different processes, materials and visual strategies and to consider what this might generate. The workshop will culminate in the presentation of work at a group critique. The workshop is aimed at students who are keen to develop an experimental approach to photography and who want to investigate an inter-disciplinary method working with photography, sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and other media.
TARGET GROUP:
This course will appeal mainly to students with a strong interest in experimental photography and the development of ideas through contemporary art (including sculpture, performance, drawing, video, painting and contextual research).
