During the lecture, led by the architect and urbanist Ujal Gorchu, we will try to analyse the exchange of ideas between architecture and art and find answers to these questions.
“Architecture is defined by the harmony of beauty and functionality”. Although this statement is partially true, it does not fully reflect the role of architecture in the history of art.
2,000 years have passed since the categories of firmitas, utillas, venutas (permanence, utility, beauty) of the ancient Roman architect and writer Marcus Vitruvius, but the architectural discourse in our society still remains between those who prefer classicism and those who want to deny history altogether. Why do you need architectural history? How can a synchronoptic view of history help us understand the context of our current creative choices? What is the relationship between the social function of architecture and art? How has the architect persona changed over the centuries and how do artists influence this image? What can be useful for other creative classes to be aware of architectural discourse?
