ARTIM: INNER NOISE BY LEYLA GABULOVA AND MURAD VALIYEV

YARAT Contemporary Art Space presents duo exhibition “Inner Noise” by young emerging artists – Layla Gabulova and Murad Valiyev.

The exhibition reveals two individual perspectives on the journey of reclaiming self-identity. The human persona experiences moral and psychological changes over the course of development that are influenced by its social environment. The set of social standards, cultural norms, and unwritten rules of generational traditions shapes the way people perceive and react to reality. These social norms frequently cause mental crises and cause people to rethink their own character.

The artists refer to their inner psyche to raise important issues such as ego, social judgment, hypocrisy, stigmas, collective and individual traumas, forced labels and narratives. Are the social norms that have been historically recognized and developed a useful means of learning about ourselves and managing our relationships with others? The artists encourage viewers to analyse and reflect on themselves while accepting and embracing who they are regardless of circumstances.

The exhibition changes the emphasis to personal resistance – the artists, who are prisoners of the deeply embedded rules, as if suffocated by all the pressure, try to break free from the accepted identity, bust through the toxic bubble of their own insecurities, and dig deeply into forgotten memories, abandoned stories, and blocked truths to learn more about themselves and others. Through their works, artists challenge the authenticity of core social standards and provide their own narratives to unlearn destructive behavioural patterns.
