Lecture by Maria Slavnova: Archaeology of the Periphery

24 Apr 15

YARAT Contemporary Art Centre is glad to invite you to a talk and follow-up discussion with Maria Slavnova dedicated to the urban research 'Archaeology of the Periphery'.

The talk is focused on the theme of peripheral territories, comparing American suburbia, favelas of Latin America, Indian slums, suburbs of Western Europe and Post Socialist cities of capitalist Asia, bringing the focus to the fringes of Moscow, a vast territory beyond the Third Transport Ring with an embedded idealistic Soviet model in urgent need of attention and understanding.

She will talk about the multidisciplinary research method SPACE(D), which takes in sociology (S), politics (P), architecture (A), culture (C), economics (E) and available live Data (D) to construct questions and meanings. Anyone interested in these fields will find this talk helpful for a better understanding of your own city and urban environment.

Maria Slavnova is an architect and researcher with a degree in Architecture from the University of Texas in Arlington and Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design. As an architect, she has worked on award-winning residences in Dallas and San Francisco. She was a part of Rebar Group in San Francisco, an art and design collective dedicated to creative activism and urban ecology. She has participated and worked on Pavement to Parks Initiative, Hayes Valley Urban Farm, conducted workshops on activating under-used spaces in Montreal and participated in workshops on urban regeneration in Taipei. She was project office leader for the research ‘Archaeology of the Periphery', conducted for the Moscow Urban Forum by Project Meganom with 2012-2013 Strelka graduates.
