PAINTING MUSEUM: ARTIST TALK BY GAYYUR YUNUS

YARAT Contemporary Art Space presents a meeting with the author of unique artworks, People's Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan – Gayyur Yunus in the framework of the project “Through the Eyes of the Artist”.

At the meeting, the artist, using example of his art works presented at the exhibition named “Labour, Leisure and Dreams: 1960s–1980s through the eyes of Azerbaijani masters”, will talk about his unique style, about the symbolism that permeates his paintings, will reveal the secret laid in the ability to mix the real and the mythical, explicit or implicit motifs and images derived from the Koran, Sufi parables and Christian plots.

A disciple of the unrivaled Sattar Bahlulzade, Gayyur Yunus has absorbed various artistic trends. His interest in the Italian and late northern Renaissance, the Kajar paintings and miniature are felt in his painting and graphics. However, within all of this, the artist still distinguishes his own unique style.

During the meeting, which will be held in a dialogue format, the artist will tell interesting stories about significant events in his creative life, talk about the search for his own style, the history of creating unrepeatable images, etc. Listeners would be able to ask the artist questions, look into the secret world of his painting, and accumulate impressions from viewing his art works.

Gayyur Yunus (b. 1948, Baku) is a People's Artist of Azerbaijan. In 1971 he graduated from the Azerbaijan State Art College. Azim Azimzadeh. In 1977 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi. Since 1972 he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Azerbaijan and abroad: in Russia, USA, Germany, Turkey, France, England, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Holland, Poland, Syria, Iran. Since 1980 he has been a member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan. In 1995 he became the winner of the Khumay International Award.

The art works of Gayyur Yunus are represented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Oriental Art, Moscow, Russia, Azerbaijan National Museum of Art, the Berlin Ethnographic Museum, Musée de l'Orangerie in France, in the Rockefeller private collection, New York; and in other galleries and private collections around the world.
