LECTURE: ALEXEY ULKO DEVELOPMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL CINEMATOGRAPHY IN CENTRAL ASIA

YARAT Contemporary Art Space kindly invited to the open lecture by Alexey Ulko, experimental filmmaker, writer and curator.


The lecture Development of Experimental Cinematography in Central Asia will focus on topics and trends, rather than specific countries, and will highlight key names in cinematography, such as Sasha Ugai, Umida Akhmedova, Alexei Rumyantsev, Ulan Dzhaparov, Zoya Falkova.

We will also study the intersection of feminist and environmental themes in the works of Almagul Menlibayeva and Saodat Ismailova.

We'll also explore how Instagram Stories and TikTok killed experimental cinema and video art.


Alexey Ulko, born in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) in 1969. Studied English at Samarkand University and obtained an MEd TTELT degree from the University of Exeter (UK). Taught English and Literary Analysis at the Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages and since 2003 has been working as a freelance consultant in English, Culture Studies and Art. Has been making experimental films since 2007 and is an active writer about Central Asian contemporary art and curator. Member of the European Society for Central Asian Studies, the Association of Art Historians (UK), the Central Eurasian Studies Society (USA) and the Editorial Board of the Garage Journal (Russia).Curator of the laboratory of young artists at the Centre for Contemporary Art under the Arts and Culture Development Foundation, Tashkent since 2021.
